Hello Parents.

Continue to keep attentive for signs and symptoms of flu and strep throat. Thank you for keeping us informed of what illness your child has.

February is Dental Health Month

The number one disease of childhood is tooth decay, cavities. It is 5 times more common than asthma.

25% of 2-5-year-old children have tooth decay.

50% of 12-15-year-old children have tooth decay

A cavity starts as a white lesion on the tooth. At this stage, the damage is repairable if recognized early and good oral hygiene is begun.  I am having the pleasure of visiting some of the classrooms and teaching the children about how to take care of their teeth and why it is important.

These are the recommendations from the American Dental Association so this has been my focus.

-Teeth should brushed twice a day for 2 minutes.

-Drinking water helps wash away food particles in between brushings.

-Floss teeth once a day-

-Have a dental check every 6 months.-

-Change your toothbrush every 3-4 months or when the bristles are no longer straight.

-Eat healthy foods (especially fruits & vegetables). Milk is an important source of calcium for strong teeth and strong bones.

-Limit snacks and fruit juice.

-Wear proper fitting protective gear/mouth-guards during sports

such as soccer, football, and basketball.

-Avoid sugary chewy candies especially, as they stick to your teeth.

Additionally, toothbrushes should be kept separate to help prevent the spread of illness.

Please look at the bulletin boards that have health and wellness information. There is one in the back hall between the cafeteria and the 6th-grade pod, right outside the nurse's office and in the nurse's office. Our Nursing website has helpful information as well. Check it out!
